#29. Olympic - “Dude! Whatever! All Good” – Wisdom
The Cortina ’26 Winter Olympics reached three new levels of excellence for: performances, sportsmanship, and mastery wisdom.
A Most Amazing Example?
25-year-old (Korean) American, Chloe Kim, was going for her 3rd straight gold medal in the event. (She first won eight years ago at 17.) This time, one of her competitors was a 17-year-old, Korean protégé, Choi Ga-On, who took a spectacular crash on her first run.
Kim, who has been mentoring Choi-Ga for the past 9 years, subsequently encouraged her shaken protégé with: “You’ve got this. You’re a badass snowboarder”. Choi-Ga then proceeded to nail a gold-medal, final run leaving Kim with the silver. And, Kim could not then have been more congratulatory to and proud of her mentee.
Unpack the Snowboarder Philosophy of: Dude! Whatever! All Good!
“Dude!” has multiple meanings depending on voice tone and context. But, when international, competitive snowboarders are hugging each other after both super and disastrous runs alike, what’s the vibe? It’s a universal greeting that reflects a friendly community of aspirants who are mutually: non-judgmental, supportive, respectful, challenging, resilient, and growing together.
“Whatever!” connotes a dismissal of negativity caused by mishaps to wipeouts. Mistakes are for learning, so don’t stress. Next time: focus on controllable, process inputs.
“All good!" is Buddhist philosophy in a nutshell. Both good and bad stuff will happen along any mastery path. The keys are:
-
To seek equanimity. Remain calm, patient, and clear-thinking to see the best way forward with maximum – acceptance, learning and (self) kindness.
-
To keep stretching outside of the mindless, automatic, comfort zone into the optimally challenging and stressful, learning zone; keep improving at a skill and growing as a person.
-
Hearing the phrase from a mentor or peer is the ultimate reassurance. There is no need for apologies. Just keep loving the process, having fun and not being attached to outcomes. With good process management the uncertain outcomes oscillate up and down, but trend better.
-
The phrase, overall, is a mantra for resilience and positivity. It’s part of a culture that values experimentation to grow, having fun, encouraging others via co-opetition, and keeping a low-stress attitude.
Bottom Line
Whether you are a mentor, protégé, or peer, whenever great (team) input efforts meet unfortunate outcomes, invoke the wisdom of: Dude! Whatever! All Good! Grow your equanimity by working through setbacks. Find the best ways forward with: camaraderie, fun, stress-free learning, courage, and personal growth. And, by loving the mastery process, your outcomes will become better and more consistent; the score will take care of itself.
